Welcome Letter

Hello,

I am very excited to be back in the grade 5/6 classroom with your child for the 2021/2022 school year! My experiences in the classroom have ranged from working at a Girls’ School, Punjabi Cultural School, and International School in Vietnam.  I have taught Grade 1,2, and 9 however my favourite age to work with based on energy and enthusiasm is Grade ⅚.

An Academic Overview:

The Grade ⅚’s will be exploring relationships this year.  The main question that we will be asking is, “How can we foster relationships with land, people and culture to create change?”.  To answer this question we will learn from the past, seek inspiration from the present, so we can lead in the future.

These are the topics that we will be exploring:

  • Grade 5 Math: Multiplication and division facts (9x9); Multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers; Divide 3-digit by one-digit numbers; Compare fractions with unlike denominators; Work with decimals (thousandths); Solve one-step equations; Solve problems with whole number solutions; Learn about probability.
  • Grade 6 Math: Convert improper fractions & mixed numbers; Learn about integers; Understand ratio and percent; Multiply & divide decimal numbers; Solve equations using Order of Operations; Use variables, graphs and tables to show number patterns.
  • Language: Reading (Book Clubs, Guided Reading Groups), Writing (Journals, Biographies, Narratives, Scripts, Newspapers) , Speaking (Presentations)
  • Social Studies: Physical Geography; Histories & Stories from Canada’s Past; Shaping Canadian Identity
  • Science: Sky Science; Evidence & Investigation; Weather & Climate; Electricity & Magnetism
  • French/Band will be taught by Mrs. Fischer

Assessment of Learning: Grade ⅚ students will be assessed through anecdotal observations,  formative and summative assessments.  Feedback in the form of marks, indicators and comments will be regularly updated through PowerSchool (https://ps.rockyview.ab.ca/public/home.html)
