Welcome To The Learning Commons Page

Welcome to the Banded Peak Learning Commons

The Learning Commons is a hub which provides support for student learning. This beautiful space overlooks the surrounding forest and offers an abundance of natural light. The Learning Commons has the capacity to support student learning by offering a flexible shared space for individual work, small group collaboration, structured classes, presentations, guest speakers and so much more!

Resources offered to students include access to print material in the form of reference books, picture books, junior novels, Young Adult novels, graphic novels as well as a robust non-fiction section. Devices for learning are supported by charging stations throughout the space.

Technical support is provided by the school technologist, who is based in the Learning Commons.

Mrs. Kemp is the Learning Commons Facilitator and can be reached pkemp@rockylview.ab.ca or 403-949-2292 (ext.7404)

Circulation Information

Students in Kindergarten to grade 2 visit the Learning Commons on a weekly basis for storytime and book borrowing. Students in grade 3 to 8 visit the Learning Commons on a weekly basis for book borrowing and independent reading. Students generally come and go from the space throughout the day to complete assignments, work in groups or obtain resources.

Students are allowed to borrow 1 – 4 books per week depending on their grade.

Books are checked out for one week at a time and may be renewed as many times as required. Students should be prepared to return or re-new their books after one week. Our littlest students require support at home to remember to return their books on their scheduled “Library Day”.

Book Care

Patrons of the Learning Commons are encouraged to take good care of the books by following these recommendations:

Keep books dry. It is often useful to have a plastic book bag inside backpacks for borrowed books in order to avoid spillage from water bottles. This is the most common form of damage to books.

Keep books away from pets. Pets can, and do, like to chew on books. Try to place books in a dedicated space at home which is out of reach of your furry family members.

Use a bookmark. Avoid turning down the corner of a page and take care when turning pages in order to avoid any rips.

It is helpful to designate a specific place at home for your library books, that way they are easily found and returned to school for library day.

if you notice damage to a book please inform Mrs. Kemp Immediately. She will attempt to repair if possible.

Lost or Damaged Book Policy

Students are responsible for the books they borrow. They are expected to return books on or before the due date and to take good care of the books while they have them checked out.

Lost Books – Every attempt is made to locate books that have not made their way back to the Learning Commons, lost books must be paid for at the replacement value.

Damaged Books – If a book is damaged too badly to repair it must be removed from circulation and discarded. Damage includes contact with liquids, mould, ripped pages or covers, writing on the book, etc.

You will receive an email in the event that your child has a lost or damaged book and a replacement charge will be added to the student’s School Cash Online account. We are unable to accept cash at the school.
