Rocky View Schools’ Return to School Operation Plan: Earlier this week Rocky View Schools shared their Return to School Operation Plan.  The plan included information around mask usage, cohorts, school assemblies/sports, and isolation.  If you have not had an opportunity to review this information please visit https://www.rockyview.ab.ca/school_2021/parent-letters/parent-letter-aug.-26-school-plans/view .

Office Hours: Banded Peak School will resume regular office hours starting on Monday, August 30th.  The office will be open between the hours of 8:00 and 3:30 Monday through Thursday and 8:00 to 2:30 on Friday.  If you require assistance outside of office hours, please email bandedpeak@rockyview.ab.ca or leave a message in our general mailbox.

Class Assignments: The staff at Banded Peak have worked hard to design our homerooms for the coming school year.  As we have accepted several new registrations over the summer, we will be taking a couple of days this week to consider our placements.  Parents/students will hear from the school about their placement between Wednesday, September 1st and Thursday, September 2nd

Staggered Entry: Looking at the feedback regarding the staggered entry days at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, we have decided to carry this model forward into the 2021-2022 school year. Feedback from parents, students and staff was overwhelmingly positive and pointed to several benefits, including the ability for students who were switching to a new teacher to have increased small group time in their new classroom, allowing them to better get to know their teacher and to learn the expectations of the classroom.  We will once again be structuring the staggered entry days by grade.

Grades 1 – 8 Staggered Entry Dates by Grade

  • September 7:  Students in Grades 1, 3, 5, and 7 will attend school on this day.  Grade 2, 4, 6, and 8 students do not attend
  • September 8 –   Students in Grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 will attend school this day.  Grade 1, 3, 5, and 7 students do not attend
  • September 9 – All students attend school
  • September 10 – All students attend school

Kindergarten Staggered Entry Dates by Last Name

  • September 7 – Students with a last name starting with letters A – F will attend
  • September 8 – Students with a last name starting with letters H – R will attend
  • September 9 – Students with a last name starting with letters S – Z will attend
  • September 10 – No school for Kindergarten on Fridays

First Day of School: additional information about the first day of school will be shared with students/parents on Friday, September 3rd.

School Supplies: All students from Grade 5 through 8 at Banded Peak are encouraged to purchase supplies for the 2021-2022 school year through the Staples School Tools program available at www.staples.ca/schooltools . Staples School Tools provides you with direct access to the school supplies your child will need – as provided by their teachers – and an easy way to order them and have them delivered.  All students from K – 4 at Banded Peak are provided with schools supplies throughout the year. Children will require a pair of indoor shoes to be kept at the school, a backpack and lunch kit.

Banded Peak Parent and Student Handbook: Parents and students are invited to review the School Handbook.  Updated each school year, the handbook provides information on sports, field trips, common expectations, our Learning Support program, dress code, and digital communication/personal devices.  Please visit https://bpeak.rockyview.ab.ca/publications/resources/Parent%20Handbook.pdf for additional information.

Allergies: Banded Peak School continues to take steps to ensure the ongoing safety of our students and staff.  This includes ensuring that we are sensitive to the health risks associated with food allergies within the school.  In alignment with the Alberta Education Act, Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and Rocky View Schools’ policies and procedures we are working to limit student/staff exposure to common allergens in our school.

We are working in a few ways to make students, teachers, parents, and facility users aware that there may be students with severe allergies in our school.  These efforts include:

  • "Allergy Aware" stop signs on classroom doors, which signify specific allergies are present.  These might include peanuts, tree nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios, and macadamia nuts), and dairy.
  • Signs at the entry doors to the school indicating that we request that nuts not be brought or sent into the school.
  • “Nut Free” Zones within our school including our Learning Commons, around computers, gymnasium, and specified classrooms
  • Signage in our bathrooms encouraging students to wash hands thoroughly
  • Educating our staff on how to handle situations should an allergic reaction occur.
  • Discussing with students any allergens that might be present in the classroom and how to ensure the safety of all students in the school.
  • Informing parents of Rocky View Schools’ Allergy Procedure at the beginning of the school year; including the responsibility of the parent, the student, the school

At Banded Peak we have several students who are highly allergic to nuts or products containing nuts.  Exposure to these allergens may result in the student going into anaphylactic shock. Anaphylactic shock is a sudden, severe, and sometimes fatal allergic response to a trigger substance such as food, vaccines, or drugs.  It may cause decreased blood pressure, dilation of capillaries or constriction of the airway.  As a result of these severe reactions, we request that you do not send peanut or nut products to school with your child in lunches, for snack, bakes sales or classroom celebrations.

We appreciate your support and would welcome any feedback you may have.

School Council: Banded Peak School Council is a structured group of parents, principals, teachers, and community representatives who work together to effectively support and enhance student learning. The Council provide a means for members of the school community to consult with and provide advice to the principal and the school board. Friends of Banded Peak Society operates with the same purpose and is responsible for funding earned through the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

School Council and Friends of Banded Peak Society meet on the third Wednesday of every month during the school year (except December and June). All members, including all parents of students who attend Banded Peak, are welcome to attend meetings. The Council is responsible for hosting events and fundraisers throughout the year, providing funding for field trips and other teacher requests, organizing volunteers for school events and initiatives, and offering a platform for members to communicate directly with school and district administration.
